Found in the Valentin free library

An enigmatic book; sometimes I thought I must have missed something and went back to see, but found that it hadn't been mentioned.
Christopher lived in Shanghai as a boy, had a Japanese friend Akira. Something happened to his parents - we see him later as an adult, a successful detective, returning to Shanghai to investigate their disappearance and if possible, find them again. I didn't find it as compelling as Remains of the Day.
